I've been using the Contigo coffee mugs from Costco for my daily steeped tea from Tim's and the screw top where I sip from seems to always "smell" weird. I have soaped it like crazy, scrubbed it using really hot water, let the water and soap run through the spout, etc., etc., but I can't get rid of the smell. I thought maybe it was that lid so I started using the other mug - same thing. WTF?

We run everything through the dishwasher... Though we do tend to have to replace them once a year or so because we get lazy and leave them dirty and there's generally no getting the stink out at that point.

I had the same problem with mine Do you have milk in your tea? I think it might be OK if you never use any milk and do a vinegar soak every week or so.

Yes, I do use milk. I'll try the vinegar tonight.

The lids are dishwasher friendly. The stainless steel part needs to be hand washed.

I run my lids through the dishwasher.
The funk is the one reason I hesitated to buy the Contigo mugs but so far I haven't had a problem and I use mine every day.

I rinse my top and bottom out after use and either hand wash or throw both parts in the dishwasher (even though the bottom is not supposed to go in there).
For those recommending vinegar do you use straight vinegar or mix with water? I'm sure my lids could use a thorough clean once in awhile.

Because I'm a bad, bad contigo mug owner, I put the whole shebang in the dishwasher. When they reach the point of being trashed and smelly, I just replace them. I also put my expensive knives in the dishwasher. I'm going to hell.
Sarcasm is still the best thing ever.

Yeah, the milk definitely makes them funky a lot faster. Even if you wash immediately, the fats stick to the plastic right away. Now that I'm a pro-star baby bottle washer the other thing you could try is blue Dawn dish soap soak and then dishwasher. The blue Dawn works like magic on breastmilk residue, so it might help with any milk residue in the Contigo (or it might not if you can't scrub in there well). We didn't have a dishwasher when I used my Contigo all of the time, so I'm not sure how much the dishwasher will help!
No other mug is as good though- my go to mug right now is a tea mug from David's. It seals completely like a thermos so I never have leaks, but I need to completely remove the lid to drink (therefore it doesn't stay warm unless I replace it). But it does wash cleanly! I may try a Contigo again if I can figure out the cleaning magic.
ETA: The other thing I was going to try for baby bottles was a denture tablet- might be worth a shot for this!

We run the tops through the dishwasher a few times a week. It really helps if you can rinse it right after you're finished drinking your tea. DH drinks tea in his mug and I drink coffee. I find his smells way worse than mine. I thought for sure the milk in my coffee would funkify my mug but so far, so good.

Well, we hardly use our dishwasher so for a hand washer, any suggestions? I'm going to try vinegar tonight, though.

The lid goes on the top rack of the dishwasher. That seems to get rid of any smells.
The cup itself, we hand wash as I think it says that only the lid is dishwasher safe.

I think if you're hand washing, you're supposed to soak the lid for 30 min. or so (I think that was on the instructions).

I soak the lids (DH can't rinse his as he is on the road) I have a little brush I use to scrub in the holes and all around, then they air dry. They still smell but there is no gunk (expet in mine as it doesn't get used as much and the last time I used it was months ago so didn't get soaked, that was not a fun experience having a chunk of old dry and chunky coffee flow into my mouth) or funky taste.

It's faster to handwash than to load the dishwasher with all our various lunch tupperware dishes, wait for it to run/dry, to then take the dishes out and repack them for tomorrow's lunch. I can wash, dry and pack the dishes so much quicker.

Heehee, yes there were! I thought it was kind of funny but took a quick look before recycling them. Of course I thought it said that the whole cup could go in the dishwasher so I obviously didn't read them closely!

I also just throw the lid and the cup on the top rack (hah, the cup goes in the bottom rack if the top rack is full!). I've had mine for 4/5/6 (?? so long I can't remember) years.

I thought the plain stainless steel ones could go in, just not the painted ones? Having said that, we put them all in the dishwasher

Ours all go in the dishwasher (along with our wooden spoons and some of our knives). I've had all of mine for a number of years with no problems.

Me too... All of this!
And when I feel lazy and have the room I even put my salad spinner in the dishwasher!

Weird, I have never had a smell....I only hand wash mine. I run hot hot water through the lid, I will also put some water in the cup, screw on the lid and shake the hell outta it.
Sometimes if you leave it to sit you can get a film of residue on the sprout part....you need to clean it out.

I put EVERYTHING in the dishwasher! If its meltable, its replaceable lol.
So the cup part- if its a pretty blue color like mine, does it come off in the dishwasher?! Thats what I am worried about. The lid goes in but the bottom I soak and rinse out.

I've been putting DH's green one in the dishwasher for quite a while, haven't noticed damage to the color from the dishwasher... But then DH works in a garage so his cup is fairly dirty and damaged anyway

I've never noticed the colored ones getting wrecked in the dishwasher... I don't wash ANYTHING by hand if I can help it!

I have a red one, and there are some tiny little chips around the bottom rim, but thats from me banging it around all the time. And seriously, its over 4yrs old! I really wanted to buy new ones this spring for camping, there was a purple set I loved. But I just couldn't justify it because both of my original set are still in nearly new condition.

bleach. I pour bleach in the lid and let it sit for a bit, then rinse out very very well. my kids were taking hot chocolate to school everyday, and then it sat all day. got stinky really fast and the only thing I could get rid of it was with bleach. they stopped taking it to school every day lol

Right now, I put the lids in the dishwasher and handwash the cups. I have to admit that I'm lazy though. Since it seems like a number of you put cups through the dishwasher without major issues, I'm going to start doing the same thing.

We have 3 sets (6 cups) and DH is the only coffee drinker! . I have the purple set, for me, for keeping water cold on the golf course, etc. Or for hot chocolate. Needed my own set to avoid any possible coffee residual taste

I use a teeny tiny little bottle brush to get all the crevices. It's the only thing that works, I find.

If our lids get gross (Mr. Gir forgets to rinse his at work), I put the lid open side up in a bowl. Sprinkle some baking soda in it, pour in some vinegar and let it do it's bubbly magic. I let it soak like that for a bit and then just wash it with dishsoap. Sometimes I use a wee little bottle brush to get in the crevices.
